Second half of the day (optional, extra cost) “Santarangelo-Rimini” sightseeing tour.

Santarcangelo Di Romagna is a picturesque town located off the Emilia Region Consular Road, 10km west of Rimini. It has about 21 000 inhabitants. The town lies between two rivers, the Uso and the Marechia. Santarangelo fiercely protects its past traditions and its uniqueness. The historic centre of the town is always buzzing with life. The well-kept buildings, the excellent restaurants and bars, the narrow streets that, as a rule, lead to the lively squares, the most remarkable of which is piazza Ganganelli. The city attracts tourists with its many attractions: the Ganganelli Arc de Triomphe, the Collegiate Church, the Ancient City Gate, the Ethnographic Museum, the History and Archaeology Museum, the mysterious tuff caves, to name just a few. The heart of the old town is on the slopes of Jupiter Hill. The medieval village fortifications are still clearly visible here, with the 14th-century Malatesta fortress towering above (photo). It was built in 1447 on the orders of Sigismund Pandolfo Matatesta using part of the high tower built by Carlo Malatesta in 1386. In 1769, Clement XIV - Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli, born in Santarcangelo - became Pope. The local council decided to immortalise this event. The triumphal arch, designed by the architect Cassimo Morelli, was therefore built between 1772 and 1777, on which a bust of the Pope was later to be mounted. However, the construction work was completed three years after the death of Clement XIV, so instead of a bust, the arch was decorated only with the papal symbols of the coat of arms and the tiara. The Collegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary (Beata Vergine del Rosario) was designed by the architect Giovanni Francesco Bonamici. Construction work began in 1744 and continued for twelve years. In 1779, an organ was installed to beautify the church and create a solemn atmosphere for the religious rites. At the end of the 19th century (1892-1893), the bell tower of the town was installed at the top of Santarcangelo Hill. The neo-Gothic tower was built by the structural engineer Giuseppe Tramontana Faenza.
