The new monkeypox variant “Clade 1b” is now spreading rapidly in several African countries, having already caused more than 500 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More recently, the new variant has also been detected in Sweden, the first confirmed case in Europe. As a result, the World Health Organisation declared an international emergency on 14 August.
